Directions - Garden State Parkway to Tappan Zee Bridge and north

I can drive this route in my sleep - which is a problem as I try to give me sister directions (she states she gets lost everytime she does this route)

So give me some help (exit numbers, landmarks, etc)

Route I want is Garden State Parkway to Tappan Zee Bridge then 684 (or is it 687), 287, to 84 thru Connecticut - I can handle the rest to Boston area. I know that signage north of Tappan Zee Bridge is not the best. Thanks.

You can get specific "turn by turn - mile by mile" driving directions between any two points at:

www.mapquest.com

Go to the website, click on "Directions", type you starting location and destination in the appropriate boxes, click "GO" and voila you'll get both a map and detailed directions, including route numbers, highway exit numbers, mileage between "points" and estimated driving time.

Thanks - the issue with mapquest, yahoo, etc is that none of them like this route - they all want to send a person over GW Bridge or if you fool them into Tappan Zee then they like Rte 15 and/or 91. I know I can exclude specific highways, piece together my desired route, I was just hoping to avoid doing that.

It is indeed 684 to 84; and then you can take 84 from Hartford into Boston.

I also can do this trip in my sleep but I always take the Henry Hudson to the Saw Mill Parkway to 684 and then 84.

I never use Mapquest anymore; Google's maps and directions are much better.

- GSP North to the End @ NYS Thruway I287E/I87S
- Take NYS Thruway/I287 about 20mi, across the TZB towards White Plains
- Take Exit 9A for I684-Brewster
- Go about 25mi on I684
- Take Exit 9E onto I84 towards Danbury CT.

I like to use maps.google.com for things like this. You can drag the route with your mouse to force it over TZB, I287 thru White Plains, etc

Yes J62:

I just found that feature myself on google maps. Very Handy! You can have fun with changing routes and Google keeps up with the changes!

I also found that you can 'right-click" on a starting point and "right click" on the ending point and Google will do the rest!

Your order is messed up. 287 comes before 684.

1 Here is the easiest way to go because you skip the Tappan Zee bridge and Westchester County:
Take the Garden State to 87 (New York State Thruway). Go north on the Thruway. Get off Exit 17 and follow the signs to 84 east. That skips all kinds of potential headaches on the Tappan Zee bridge and on 287. You'll be going over the Newburgh Beacon bridge instead of the Tappan Zee.

2. If you want to go over the Tappan zee bridge, you have two ways of going.
A. When you get over the Tappan Zee bridge, follow the signs to the Saw Mill North. (I think it's the second exit after you cross the bridge. I don't think the exit is numbered and the signs are a little confusing because they reference the Saw Mill and Route 119. Stay north on the Saw Mill. The Saw Mill ends in Northern Westchester and leads into 684.
B. Otherwise, when you go over the Tappan Zee bridge, stay on 287 (Cross Westchester). You have to drive past all the White Plains exits. Then take the exit for 684. I think it's exit 9-A. The signs are well marked. Go north on 684. As 684 ends around Brewster, you will take 84 heading east.

If she gets easily confused, the route that takes NYS Thruway North to Exit 17, then I-84 East would be easier.

If there is traffic then it'll take no longer than the route I described above, and tolls will be less too.

Thanks - I can piece together all the great info here and send her an email.

This is an important trip, so don't want to start off with anyone being stressed - our mother's 80th birthday and first time all her kids have been together with her in 20 years since our father died.

Going northbound the Garden State Parkway "ends" at the intersection with I-87 (the Interstate you take to the Tappan Zee Bridge) - just follow the signs.

You exit right off the Parkway then the ramp forks - left fork goes to I-87 toward Tappan Zee Bridge - the right fork goes to local streets. Really, it is very difficult to miss the road leading to I-87.

Cape Cod directions, "S.O.S."! Traveling to Yarmouth, MA for first time. Don't want via GW Bridge, prefer Tappan Zee Bridge. Overwhelmed with different choices. Was given these: Garden State Parkway N to end (at I-87/NY State Thruway). Divider: Take TZ Bride for about 5 miles (?). Exit for 95N (go thru NY, CT, RI). Take Exit 6 (?) for 495S, to Cape Cod Canal. Cross Bourne Bridge. OK then: After crossing Bourne Bridge, then where to? Please help! Thank you!

ev: That ramp Roams mentions is the trickiest part. Tell her to pay close attention there and right after she goes through the toll booths on the bridge to pickup 287.

The original thread is from 2008 so we can disregard the old question.

Today, Debski asks for Cape Cod directions

How to get to Yarmouth after crossing the Bourne Bridge onto Cape Cod.

Personally, I would cross the canal onto Cape Cod on the Highway 6 bridge, as you will be taking Rt6 to Yarmouth.

If you cross the Bourne bridge, then you can turn left at the circle right over the bridge and take the local road over to Rt6.

Look at google maps to see the detail.

Fridays are always bad. Rush hours near any metropolitan areas (NYC, Hartford, Boston) are always bad. Saturdays and Sundays are bad in the summer.

To get to Norwood, I would take the GS Pkwy to the Tappan Zee to 287, 684, 84, Mass Pike, to the I-95S exit to Norwood.

Weekends are grim in the summer.

Vincenzo's directions certainly work, but because of local traffic issues, it is normally better to approach Norwood, Dedham, etc from Providence on 95 rather than from the MassPike.

When I lived in Norwood and then Milton, I took the Tappan Zee and 287 to the Merritt Parkway and got off to rejoin I-95 at Milford, CT. There are a few slow stretches until New Haven, then 91 sucks the majority of traffic north to Hartford, and you can usually enjoy a fairly pleasant ride on 95 all the way to Norwood.
